Gladiolus: how hardy outdoors if dry?

Dear all:
Summer growing Gladioli can be fairly hardy while dormant provided
they are VERY dry then. Many of them receive hard frost during their winter
dormancy but again there is not a drop of rain for that season. If they
receive waterings while dormant there will be a death of the roots that will
produce a fungus explosion ascending up into the corms and these will die.
Regards
Alberto
