Hippeatrum X johnstonii fertility

Hi Jim:
Here X johnstonii and other equally hardy hybrids are grown in
gardens and routinely set seed without assisted pollination. It may be bees
or they may be maternal; usually seed is left uncollected. If sown all that
seed is fertile and produces a 100% vigorous plants. I think the long hot
summers have a lot to do with this free seed production. Bulbs remain in the
ground all year round although the foliage gets frozen to the ground.
Regards
Alberto
