I grow a few in the ground in a raised bulb bed in Southern California. The potting mix is a combination of native soil (mostly aluvial granite and clay) with some potting soil and pumice added.

They do OK, but no better. I get better bulb increase in ones in pots.

The bed gets some water all year around, with summer water very much on the light side. I have some Veltheimia and some Amaryllis, some Babiana, Albuca, and other South African growers in the same bed. The Amaryllis probably require the bed growth. The Babiana and Albuca show a vast difference growing in the ground from pots and look much better than pot grown plants.
