Yes, the photo #3 showing the tree ring is around the base of a sourwood 
tree, or Oxydendron arboreum, one of the finest slow-growing eastern USA native 
trees... it's a member of the Ericaceae, with lily-of-the-valley like flowers, 
or perhaps like an Andromedia or Pieris, but in tree form.
