Raised beds and capillary action

Regarding techniques to manage soil moisture, there are two elaborate
chapters in the edited volume "Rock Garden Design and Construction" (Timber
Press, 2003) devoted to this subject.

In addition, the "regional" chapters in the book describe how soil moisture
problems in different parts of North America can be addressed.

I admit that I have an interest (editorial, not monetary) in sales of this
book; however, I think it justifiable to recommend it to bulb growers, even
if they have no interest in rock formations or alpine cushion plants.
