That same fall line runs right up the eastern side of North America: I
garden here in Maryland just to the west of that same fall line, on the
piedmont. Speaking very broadly, the soils here are loamy clays, while a few
miles to the east on the coastal plain, the soils become progressively
siltier and  sandier the farther east you go.
