Drainage in pots/vertical slits

**I've been looking at the gallon cans that I'm using for 
seeding/replanting/etc. right now. All of them have vertical oval 
shaped holes in the sides with a bit of each hole going slightly 
under the can into the bottom. None of mine have holes in the bottom.
I assume these work like the vertical slits described.
