Perhaps you may be recalling Viburnum carlesii, currently in bloom here, 
cloyingly sweet and will perfume our entire lower garden for about 10 days.  It 
has an iron constitution and is hardy at least to at least USDA Zone 4B.  
Requires protection from the local deer as they love the flower buds.
