Jim W. did something interesting in his most recent post. He spelled Carthamus carthamnus. I'm not nit-picking here. What makes it interesting to me is that when I composed my post where I mentioned Carthamus, I too spelled it Carthamnus. But I noticed Angelo's spelling, and checked it against a trusted reference - and learned something. Evidently this incorrect spelling is common in American publications. A Google search on Carthamnus gives about 325 hits - some of them in places where you would expect better. A Google search on Carthamus gives 179,000 hits. IPNI of course does not find carthamnus.
