Hi Susan,
I have notice of Dahlia imperialis grown in the cold Italy, where winter is about -7°C, mulched with dried leaves, on a south sloping faced wall. I grow it in a big pot and it reaches over 4 meter high. Last year I lost blooming for the frost, in the 2003 it flowerd before frost and it is really a good view.
I hope this year too.
