I am also an editor of (mostly academic reference) books and have done
several projects for Timber Press, and I asked them if I could have a pass
over Janis's book -- and said I would do it FOR FREE -- because I knew his
ad hoc English would give a nonspecialist a lot of trouble. The press
(recently bought by a larger publisher) ignored my offer.

Their loss, Jane. And Janis's too. I met Janis in 2002 when he was the
keynote speaker at the American Daffodil Society convention in Cincinnati, which I
co-chaired. He's a fine gentleman and not at all difficult to understand.
The attitude of the new owners is not particularly surprising.
