what is considered bulbous

I can assure you all that as a very poor geophyte grower I have often
demonstrated that the evergreens can indeed "survive[s] an unfavourable
period" ! ;-)

Seriously isn't it likely that they evolved that way to keep in reserve
coping with unusual unfavourable conditions ?
