Many years ago I lived in zone 5 in a snowy climate with dryish summers. The previous owner planted Fritillaria Imperialis next to the house on the east side in complete shade from two tall trees. The soil was heavy with sporadic irrigation. They flowered most years, though they looked weak. Who would have thought they'd survive in those conditions? I've never been able to grow them since.
