Hippeastralia Experiment

David:

My understanding, which may be based in complete fable, is that
Hippeastrelia is a primary cross between a Hippeastrum hybrid and
Sprekelia formosissima. At this point, I would assume the red is
dominant being the only color for Sprekelia and the dominant color for
Hippeastrum. With that in mind, I would guess that a primary cross using
a white or yellow Hippeastrum would be the only way to have a chance at
diluting red to a pinkish hue??? Any successive generations, I would
guess would dilute the phenotypic characteristics offered by Sprekelia
if backcrossed to Hippeastrum, or reintroduce the dominance of red if
backcrossed to Sprekelia.

I suppose your intention would be to keep backcrossing to Hippeastrum,
but selecting for outliers that most resemble Sprekelia? I would assume,
then, that each generation would be less and less likely to show the
phenotypic traits of Sprekelia, which would require the need to observe
larger populations for outliers.
