Some years ago, a co-worker came to me asking me about a reference in a mystery novel which was "the night song of the Cancun vulture." I checked my few bird reference books, the Sacramento, California, Audobon Chapter, and finally an international site in British Columbia, Canada. I was especially puzzled with the night song descripture because I had always thought vultures were diurnal. I wrote a query to the author of the mystery care of his publisher and forgot about the issue. Several months later, I received a hand written response from the author telling me "I made it all up."
