Begging to differ, but as a New Yorker who went to college in Chicago in the 50's, we were always shocked at the brevity of springs there: in New York, spring was a rather protracted season.  A typical letter to the folks would go...

"Dear Folks,
     I was going to invite you out here for spring, but you missed it.  It occurred yesterday at 2:00 P.M.
