I think you're confusing gender with sex.  Morea may be feminine in gender, but sexually ambivalent, typically.

Mike, Don't get carried away about Moraea polystacha. It is a female species and thus is the most unpredictable of the moraeas. She may dazzle you one year and then make no appearance the next. She may bloom early or bloom late or turn up in some other pot. However, we can't help but love her.
