Off topic: pits of cured olives; was RE: Native N American crops

I recently read that cultivated olives were originally dispersed throughout
the Middle East by the soldiers who accompanied Alexander the Great on his
eastward adventures.

I'm not interested in whether this story is true or not. But this got me
wondering: does anyone know if the stones/pits of cured olives contain
viable embryos?

I've saved the pits from some cured olives and planted them in one of the
cold frames. Am I wasting my time?
