Favorite stories about bulbs?

Hello,
I for one am very fond of E. A. Bowles' gardening books.
His description of a "simple" bulb is a classic!
He was not very widely travelled though by todays standards.
Just european based and thus mostly european bulbs.
His description of Dracunculus muscivorus is quite something too!
