Perhaps familiarity.  When I was younger we used to be able to go out and
have much greater access to the fields and woodlands and out native flora
was much more observable.  Many of those places are now under asphalt or
fenced off or otherwise inaccessible.  I know I came late to wanting to
grow more natives.
