It can be a pH issue as well. I seem to recall many mosses prefer slightly acid environments. Perhaps you could raise the pH of your water a bit. Winter-growing bulb seedlings grow fine with Phoenix tap water, whose pH in the mid 8 range. Leo Martin Phoenix Arizona USA
