Your climate is similar to that of northern New Mexico, Arizona around Prescott, and the "warmer" parts of the Colorado Plateau (think species tulips!). Having spent many years in southeastern Arizona and southwestern Texas, I have much experience with what we call "high desert," but even that isn't nearly as cold as your region.
