Despite the cool summers in parts of Europe, the plant only makes tubers
when the day length is short. In many places, frost kills the plants before
they have a chance to produce mature tubers. They grow great here in
Berkeley but year's harvest is small for me because the yacon (Smallanthus
sonchifolius) took most of their sunlight away.
