Actually, it's a horrid drug for the treatment of gout.  There are much better treatments these days.  I use allopurinol -- no nausea, and I don't have to wait for a gout attack before I start a treatment that may not work but will invariably make me feel awful.
 
But, colchicine can be used to form diploid (or higher) gametes.
