Cuttting vertically with a sharp knife where the bulbs join one another below the basal plate is safer. Snapping them apart will leave you with damaged/lost basal plates. I know some will say now that this species comes from the Sahara but in habitat and in my climate there are living thick white roots during their summer dormanc,y therefore any effort to maintain them alive would be worthwhile. In ohter words, replant immediately after the clump division takes place.
