Merwillea question

Dear All,

My Merwillea natalensis, formerly Scilla, is now in the open garden in a well drained place with summer irrigation. It looks much much happier there than before in a pot. As winter rain has set in, I wonder if I can leave it unprotected during its winter dormancy. If I remember rightly, there are large clumps of it in the Berkeley Botanical Garden also in the open ground. Do they put some kind of rain protection over the bed of South African summer growing bulbs? Can those of you who garden in the same kind of Mediterranean climate like me advise me how to handle this bulb in winter? So far it does not show any signs of wanting to go dormant but I do not want to lose it to winter rain.

Thank you very much in advance,

Uli
