snails and biocontrol.

From the University of California IPM webpage:

The predatory decollate snail
<https://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/NE/decollate_snail.html>, *Rumina decollata*, is
used in Southern California citrus groves and other crops, gardens, and
landscapes to control <https://ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/R/I-SM-RDEC-BH.009.html> young
brown garden snails and can provide very effective biological control.
Decollate snails can also feed on seedlings, small plants, and flowers,
although they are less problematic than brown snails. Snail baits will kill
decollate snails. You should not use baits where these predators are active.

Because of the potential impact of the decollate snail on certain
endangered mollusk species, it legally cannot be released in California
outside of Fresno, Imperial, Kern, Los Angeles, Madera, Orange, Riverside,
Santa Barbara, San Bernardino, San Diego, Ventura, and Tulare counties. *Even
in counties where decollate snails are permitted, they should not be
introduced in or near natural areas because of the potential danger to
endangered native snails*
We used these tiny predatory snails at my folk’s place in Northern San
Diego County and they worked very well. The European snails would
disappear for a few years. Eventually, the population would rebound and we
would just get more of the predators. It worked way, way better than snail
bait. Please note, however, that these snails are not to be used
everywhere because of the potential of impacting native terrestrial
snails. Will have to peruse the scientific literature to see what testing
was done prior to giving the OK to sell these as biocontrol.
Will post what I find out, but it may take a few days.

Rats really like snails, but not a control organism I would recommend!
I’ve torn out big expanses of ivy used as ground cover (primo rat habitat)
and found tons of empty, chewed on snail shells.
