Drimia maritima bulb rot - from above!

 Paul,
I have had this happen to D. maritima and also occasionally to Eucomis.  If there's an active growth pushing up, you probably have little to fear, but if you're really concerned about it, you can carefully peel back some of the tunic around the top, see where the new sprout(s) are coming up, and then get between them with a really sharp knife and cut a notch for the water to drain out.
Lastly, treating the hole with fungicide would be helpful.  If you don't have any suitable commercial fungicide, sprinkle in a bunch of cinnamon and rub it around to coat the surface.  Orchid people use cinnamon to treat leaf rot in phals and it works great.
Good luck!
