Thanks for sharing the info on your success! It's very useful to hear what
works for you. My experience with M. speciosa has been frustrating -- it
blooms occasionally, but often takes years off when it doesn't bloom, or
even make leaves. A friend had a similar experience. We're both California
growers.

(By the way, it's possible to hybridize M. polystachya and M. speciosa. The
hybrids look more like polystachya than speciosa, and bloom reliably.
Unfortunately they're also frost sensitive; if we get frost when they're
blooming (in mid-winter), that's the end of the blooms for the year.
