Dear All,

I looked these up to continue our reporting of how long it takes certain
bulbs to bloom from seed. I just didn't have time also to record the
germination times as I have realized how far behind I am on repotting.

From coastal northern California here is my report for the next phase of
her research.

I looked up on my germination data base and found I got the following to
flower from seed in 1 to 2 years. :

Allium carinatum ssp. pulchellum
Allium cyathophorum v. farreri
Allium dichlamydeum (usually it takes an extra year)
Allium flavum
Anigozanthos flavidus
Arthropodium strictum
Calochortus uniflorus
Cyclamen cilicum
Cyclamen hederifolium
Cyclamen intaminatum
Cypella coelestis
Delphinium patens patens
Freesia laxa
Freesia viridis
Geissorhiza aspera
Geissorhiza bracteata
Geissorhiza sp. (marked fulva, but not that)
Hesperantha bachmanii
Hesperantha baurii
Hesperantha cucullata
Hesperantha erecta
Ixia frederickii
Ixia polystachya
Lachenalia rubida
Lilium formosanum
Lilium formosanum pricei
Moraea venenata
Moraea villosa
Pasithea caerulea
Romulea flava
Romulea linaresii
Romulea sp. (many different wrong names, but all turning out to be ones
with a small purple flower with a yellow center)
Romulea tetragona
Sparaxis hybrids
Sparaxis parviflora
Sparaxis sp. (seed was marked pillansii, but it looks like tricolor to me)

I invite anyone else who has records and time to look them up to report the
things they got to bloom in 1 to 2 years from seed.

Also Diane I found this posting of Will Ashburner's about his experiences
growing Moraeas from seed. Most of these seem to be just a little over two
years. He lives in sunny Australia where as Robin would point out there is
more light. But you might want to add it to your list. It is a pity he is
so busy these days because he probably has data like this on all kinds of
things he has grown from seed.

"I have had M. polystachya flower in 18 months from seed sown. Some
records of recent flowers below, the first is weeks to germinate, the
second is weeks to flower;

Moraea alticola 10 118
Moraea bellendenii 5 130
Moraea bubalina 5 136
Moraea insolens 5 129
Moraea macronyx 5 120
Moraea moggii 29 136
Moraea ramosissima 6 130
Moraea serpentina 3 130
Moraea spathulata 6 135
Moraea thomsonii 6 128
Moraea tricuspidata 5 126
Moraea tripetala 3 121, 124

All were sown in Autumn (Fall) outside in a shaded area and subjected to
normal day/night changes. As you can see even the Summer growers (except
moggii) germinated pretty quickly.

All the best

Will Ashburner
