Velloziaceae is a family containing some 9 genera and about 270 species distributed widely. The taxonomy of this family is somewhat controversial and the 9 genera have been moved in and out of this family. These are Acanthochlamys, Barbacenia, Barbaceniopsis, Burlemarxia, Nanuza, Pleurostima, Talbotia, Vellozia, and Xerophyta. Some species can be described as ‘arborescent’ while others are shrubs, or herbs. Seeds are non-fleshy and small.
