Current Photographs / Calochortus superbus
May 02, 2024, 02:31:15 AM
Two forms of Calochortus subperbus blooming on May Day in a pot on my terraza.  I am not sure if they were from the same seed lot as I combined some when I moved to Spain to conserve space.  I like the contrast and will probably leave them together when I do my fall repotting.

I second the Crocus society and have been participating in the exchange for a couple of years now.  Always an interesting list though names are not always up to date from the donors.  It is a good place to start.

Bulb and Seed Exchanges / BX 471
April 16, 2024, 04:11:25 AM
I am trying to find a list of the offerings from BX 471.  The forum seems to have a gap from 463 through 478.  The search function brings up BX 482 when I enter 471.  If anyone can send a link to the list it would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Quote from: David Pilling on December 07, 2023, 10:53:15 AMJohn Cleese beat me to it

Cleese has had his moments for sure. He had a very funny TV show called Fawlty Towers that was well done and highly enjoyable. Much of the humor would not make it on regular American TV at the time. I think it was shown on the Public Broadcasting Station (PBS).

Another great English favorite was Are You Being Served.  It had no connection to the Monty Python gang, but it was very funny and entertaining.

Finally, there was a series called The Irish Resident Magistrate on PBS that was very worthwhile.

Ah, the good old days.....................
Loved all of these, and many more from the good old days of British humor.  I would add "To the Manor Born". "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin", the "Black Adder" series and so many more.  We brought many of these on DVD with us when we moved to Spain from the US, with our region free EU DVD player not being sure how accessible some might be.  We did not realize our DVD player was an EU model until we unplugged it when we moved and found it had an adapter for the US.  Got lucky when I bought it before we ever contemplated the move as it automatically detects input current and output format.

Ondine is usually very good at replying as soon as she can.  Sometimes she is just overwhelmed.

Closing for holidays is often very different in other parts of the world.  Don't expect anything to happen in August in Spain and a fair part of Europe, and December/early January here is packed with holidays and long closures.  Even my wife's quarterly self employment tax submission deadline is later than normal for the fourth quarter as they factor in the fact that no one is working.  It is actually a pleasant change, one just has to accept it and get used to it.

They all turn yellow as they age.

Now blooming on our patio in Armilla, Spain.  Originally acquired as a single bulb from Telos Rare Bulbs, this divided during growth in 2021.  This is the first time it has flowered for me.

General Discussion / Re: Found my gophers' cache!

I had a former landscaper friend who had planted over 10,000 daffodil bulbs in a clients yard.  The client called to complain that most of the daffodils hadn't come up.  He went by and looked over the fence and found a gopher had moved most of the bulbs, the hillside below their fence was a field of daffodils.

I sure I am not speaking for myself when I say thank you for the notification and your hard work.

Hello Carlos,

I just saw your post.  I probably have some calochortus seed to spare, but I am very behind in going through my seed and planting it due to a remodel that happened months earlier than expected.  Currently it is all sealed in the refrigerator but once I get in to see what is there and I can spare I will let you know.  Thank you again for all the seed you sent me when I arrived in Spain.

Four ruptures following sizeable explosions that were measurable on the Richter scale to a heavily reinforced pipeline is hardly accidental.

Current Photographs / Re: Hepl with repotting the bulbs

My wife is offering to help me with repotting and wants to learn more about the plants.  I hope this equates to marital bliss but I am a bit nervous about it.

General Discussion / Arisaema candidissimum
August 28, 2022, 10:54:54 AM
I grew Arisaema candidissimum in Seattle and they had the typical three lobed leaf.  This year, growing in Granada, Spain the plants I had in the US and new plants acquired from the EU exchange all grew with a single lobed leaf, as pictured.  They were shaded but even the shade here can be quite warm.  Is this something that would be related to growing temperature?

General Discussion / Re: Mealy bugs and scale

Thank you for the suggestions.  I think a very heavy pruning is going to be in order, but I hate to think what it will look like based on some of the bad cuts on large limbs I see on the tree.  The main limbs are over 20cm in diameter.

I have been amazed that I have not seen a single ant on this tree.  The only ants I have seen on the property on the front walk area.  The ivy that I removed was infested with aphids, but I haven't seen them, ants or aphids, on other plants in the area.

Good to hear about Acetamiprid.  I had some Amaryillids with mealybugs and the systemic was the only thing that worked.
