Just opened on our terraza today.  I believe I got this one from Telos Rare Bulbs.  It is the first time it has bloomed for me.

Current Photographs / Calochortus superbus

Two forms of Calochortus subperbus blooming on May Day in a pot on my terraza.  I am not sure if they were from the same seed lot as I combined some when I moved to Spain to conserve space.  I like the contrast and will probably leave them together when I do my fall repotting.

Bulb and Seed Exchanges / BX 471
April 16, 2024, 04:11:25 AM
I am trying to find a list of the offerings from BX 471.  The forum seems to have a gap from 463 through 478.  The search function brings up BX 482 when I enter 471.  If anyone can send a link to the list it would be much appreciated.

Thank you

Current Photographs / Veltheimia bracteata

Now blooming on our patio in Armilla, Spain.  Originally acquired as a single bulb from Telos Rare Bulbs, this divided during growth in 2021.  This is the first time it has flowered for me.

General Discussion / Arisaema candidissimum
August 28, 2022, 10:54:54 AM
I grew Arisaema candidissimum in Seattle and they had the typical three lobed leaf.  This year, growing in Granada, Spain the plants I had in the US and new plants acquired from the EU exchange all grew with a single lobed leaf, as pictured.  They were shaded but even the shade here can be quite warm.  Is this something that would be related to growing temperature?

General Discussion / Mealy bugs and scale
June 27, 2022, 09:38:23 AM
I have unfortunately discovered that a 10m tall Laurus nobilis that is planted on our rear patio is severely infested with mealy bugs and scale.  We recently bought the property and the upper part of the tree was obscured by some tacky metal roofing which hid the obvious damage to the upper branches of the tree and also prevented the sticky honeydew from the insects from hitting our patio.  The tree had been very badly pruned over the years, which was obvious to us.

Is there anything short of cutting the tree down to treat it?  The only treatments I know are probably illegal in the EU and would render the leaves unusable in cooking.

I have closely inspected the few other plants that exist on the property and for now none of them seem to have an infestation.  Of course I don't want a breeding ground for these pests in my garden and potentially infecting my bulbs and other plantings.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

General Discussion / Biarum dispar
June 10, 2022, 09:21:11 AM
I have two Biarum dispar that are just now coming into bloom, which from all I can tell is about three months early.  I live in Andalusia, Spain, which is in its native range.  They were unpotted while dormant last fall and repotted after about one month.  They have been growing in a pot with some other now dormant Mediterranean climate plants.

Does anyone have experience with this blooming off-season?  It should be completely dormant now.
