Title: Oxalis ID question
Post by: Uli on September 03, 2023, 03:54:07 AM
Dear All,

Right now I am sorting my bulbs and try to update labels and lists.

I have a problem identifying an Oxalis. The label says O. luteola MV 96013. I checked the Michael Vassar accession list on the Wiki and such a number does not exist. His numbers stop with 7693. It is listed as MV 96013 in the bulb list of ELDA, that is where I got it from. My label says: golden yellow winter flowering.
I know that Michael Vassar sometimes added a capital ,B' to his field numbers, maybe someone has taken a capital B for the number 13? But even with this in mind I cannot find it. The first figure 9 does not exist in the MV field notes.

Can someone help?

Thank you very much

Uli

See my dormant Oxalis collection below...... smile....

The MV accession list on the wiki is here:

https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/files/00_others/MV_complete_Oxalis_list.pdf

How about:

6018 O. sp. Southern entrance to Hellspoort, northwest of Grahmstown.

Kind of a computer problem given all the numbers in the list, which is 96013 the most likely typo for.

Another possibility is 4960B.
I wasn't aware of the MV list on the wiki.  A useful resource.  (Thank you, David, for posting this.)

Hello David and Eugene,

Thank you very much for trying to help. But unfortunately I did not get any further. I grow MV 4960B which differs from the odd 96013. however, I will check more closely once the two are in flower. Your explanation, @Eugene, sounds very plausible.
@David, the number 6018 on Michael Vassar's accession list does not give any information on the plant.

Thank you again

Uli

I have decided to go through my lot of MV pots of oxalis , & check against a list I originally obtained from Charles Hardman and now with the updated version from David Pilling. Anything that does not match the descriptions and is very similar to the others correctly? labeled pots will be trashed. The unnamed stuff has to go. I need to make room for known specimens in the future. I have been meaning to do this for some time.

Uli,

The most intuitive way to resolve this is to investigate whether someone  transposed a 9 for a 7.  See if 76013 matches your plant.

Thank you, @Marc,

I looked at the Michael Vassar accession list but the number 76013 does not exist, neither a number 760B.

I have not yet contacted the supplier of this particular Oxalis, maybe he knows.

Is it convenient for you to share a copy of David Pilling's MV number list? The list of MV numbers provided by Mr. Christiaan van Schalkwyk on the PBS website feels flawed.

They are talking about the list David shared up here in this topic (https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/pbsforum/index.php?msg=4553)

The MV accession list on the wiki is here:

This was supplied to the PBS wiki by Michael Vassar, Curator of Floristic Gardens at the Huntington Botanical Garden.

Dear All,

Does anybody know of the whereabouts of Christian van Schalkwyk in South Africa? I have tried to contact him some time ago using the email address from his contributions about the Genus Oxalis to the email list but no reply. Christian, are you reading this?

If you prefer, you can reply privately to me.

Thank you very much
