Marmalade ONLY refers to citrus peel in thickened sugar syrup. Any other use of the word is semantic dilution. (I was raised by a parent who told me never to correct people, unless it was for English usage or grammar.)  ::)

Another test. I will click my Sparaxis id=0 now. Nothing happened.
Javascript is enabled. I am using Chrome. When I do "inspect" to see the underlying page code, it shows that the attachment-related links do point to javascript. I will attach a screenshot of "Inspect" as the fourth attachment to this post. (After clearing the marmalade recipe that I was going to post for David's amusement, which, btw, never did gel.)

Now, manually typing in the markup to put the 4th attachment inline:
Well I typed that in but then when I clicked the Toggle View icon (sqbrkt-arrow-sqbrkt) that erased what I had typed, (expletive redacted).
I will try clicking the "(Insert Attachment 3)" link again now... [attach id=3 msg=106]
Ah hah - and now it magically DOES insert. I am convinced this smf has a random function to turn things on and off and that Users are rats in a maze being tested for their tenacity. I dare not click Preview for fear it will delete the markup.

Sorry. I did not realize that "Insert attachment" text was an actionable thing. Your screenshot makes that clear now. So, I will test it:
I re-uploaded my Iris_ordinarious.jpg and I clicked on the "Insert Attachment 0" text to the right of the Choose File box. Nothing happened. I looked at Preview and I see no image. I tried the Toggle View and still no image. Do I understand correctly that you did not type in the squarebracket attach tag yourself, that having clicked the "Insert Attachment 0" inserted that code for you? I am going to Post to see if that makes the image show up.

Thank you Martin.
The Code: [Select] thing is supposed to show the code, right?
Perhaps it is a permission thing, but for me, it does not show any code.
It says:
[font=dejavu sans mono][size=x-small][ You are not allowed to view this attachment ][/size][/font]
I also tried hovering and have not yet discovered a hover that shows a clue.
OK, I like the eye-rolley smiley too. And it does often apply to me.

Update: well NOW that codes DOES show. Did you change a setting?
And the reason I did not try the attach code is because I did not know it existed, no having been able to see the code.

ok I will try adding more pretty flowers inline using the image tag and a wild guess how to refer to a given attached file...
(1) first I upload my pretty flowers
(2) the only identifiers I see so far are the filenames and the attachment indices {0,1,2,3} so... poking blindly in the dark...
(3) I copied the link to David's crocus:
https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;ts=1616860150;topic=11.0;attach=59;image
which as code is:
https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;ts=1616860150;topic=11.0;attach=59;image
so wrapping an img tag around that...
Nope that does not put an image there. [Update: later it did appear.]
Could one of you do a screenshot of the markup to insert an inline image using an attached file's link?
And please delete the eye-roll emoticon before posting. I do realize my incompetence.
(4) Well by all the sand on the shore that crocus photo DOES now appear above. It did not before. So Im going to try to reverse engineer to get it to show my own new attachments by incrementing that 59 of the crocus...
(https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;ts=1616860150;topic=11.0;attach=60;image) is 60
(https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;ts=1616860150;topic=11.0;attach=61;image) is 61
(https://www.pacificbulbsociety.org/smf/index.php?action=dlattach;ts=1616860150;topic=11.0;attach=62;image) is 62
Maybe those will not appear until they upload.

when I clicked on the crocus photo (which I believe is a thumbnail) it did NOT download. It just got bigger.

Is the crocus photo (between some text and some more text) done with an img tag and url to david's TEG site or with an uploaded/attached image?

Hello Uli,
I see your reply. I have my settings on for notification.

I expect you are right. The forum will scare off some people. And, conversely, it will thrill other people. I do not know what is best. I tend to stay with old tech until there is a strong need for new tech. That need differs for each person. It would be tragic to lose our long-term, knowledgeable contributors if the forum scares them off. And we have already lost the Pretty Blooms people to facebook. (I enjoy their pretty bloom pics there.) I am glad the decision is not up to me!

However, if PBS does want a forum, SMF seems ok, to me. Not perfect, but acceptable. (And I tend to dislike forums.)

Hello All,

Uli's message brings up another point. Unless part of a post is quoted, it will not be clear to whom a reply is directed, unless the poster also starts with a salutation as Uli did here to me. And the same folks who quite the entire digest upon reply are likely to do the same here.

All those list subscribers who do not even know how to use their own email app (let alone be aware they ARE using an email app) are not going to understand the mechanics of the forum.

For certain a forum will change the character of PBS. The old/current mail list is a filter which tends to discourage the "Ohhh pretty!" thus creating less clutter between serious discussions of horticulture and taxonomy. But SRGC seems to have survived having a forum. So, as I said, I am glad it is not my decision.

So it seems I'm the only board member actually interested in this...
Not necessarily. Maybe the board members have not figured out how to access the forum, or how to register, or what the forum actually is and how they would interact with it. They may not know what to test, what features to look for. They may not actually grasp what a forum is. At least one board member has admitted lack of tech awareness. I am not judging that as a fault, just as a possible explanation why we are not seeing them on the test forum.
Are any of the board members participants in the SRGC forum?
Have you monitored the Guest activity? Perhaps they are just not registering.

I looked again at the SRGC forum and saw they have a translation option, a drop-down select thing at upper right on their page. I do not know if it is a SMF add-on, or if PBS wants it. If it would encourage PBS participation by a certain Latvian, Id be all for it. :)

What aspects of this forum should I be testing/trying?
What questions do you want answered before deeming it ready/acceptable?
Is the forum planned for a replacement to the mail list, or just an additional tool?
Who decides? The board, I assume. If so, they will want to try it out themselves. I can understand wanting the wrinkles smoothed before that happens.

So far I am pleased with the forum as it is set up now. There is a learning curve, but it is not as awkward as I expected. Some features are not ideal, such as not having captions for images, but still that is better than the present scrubbed links in the mail list.

Those emoji faces at the top of this text edit box look creepy (to me). I bet each is loaded with deep meaning unknown to me. Do pbs members want those?

I'll try out the other edit features below.
Table:

letternumber
a1
b2

Some text markup: CO2 r2

Lists

  • a
  • b
  • c

  • 1
  • 2
  • 3
Well it is slightly strange that the list items are superscripts. Maybe that is still "on" after my r2 test.
If so, then how does one un-superscript?
Testing... ah. Click the sup thing to stop superscript.

I am not representative here because I've never liked those tiny-mice type edit tools. One markdown syntax seems enough. Why re-invent it. Grumble grumble...

And finally, I did forget to hit the shift. If this gets submitted, then shift-alt-s works.Í
Nope.
Trying option-sß
Nope.
Trying shift-option-sÍ
Nope.
command-s does not work either.
Using the Post button does work tho.

How about a rule, for every board we have to find a moderator.

OK I will modify the board "Tiny Blue Bulbs that are Winter Growers in a Mild Mediterranean Climate and how to Propagate them from Seed".

The "Gardening by the seaside..." is your Personal Text, not your Signature. And I agree it is better to put that there because the signature hogs screenspace below each message whereas the Personal Text is at left in a <td> which would be blank there otherwise anyway.

Notice I did finally figure out why SMF was timing out when I tried to upload my avatar pic. It had to be tiny (in this case 155x155 pixels) or I got a "timed out" error.

Still exploring... I am sure I will find LOTS more to complain about. :)

Topic title should have been "Decoration" or "CSS" or something to generally refer to colors and appearances because...

Since our forum is using what I assume is the default css, it looks identical in background, layout, colors as the SRGC forum and SMF's own Help forum.
Something as basic as using green hues instead of blue hues would distinguish pbs's forum from others.

Again, if frivolous then > /dev/null

PBS Forum Feedback & Help / favicon same as wiki
March 24, 2021, 08:40:26 AM
Hi forum admins,
Could we please have a different favicon for the forum than for the wiki and pbs website?
Because I'm one of those people who have a gazillion browser tabs open so the page titles do not show, only the favicons.
If this is a frivolous request, then disregard.
Thanks guys.
G

Still not used to forum message format. I guess I do not sign it, right? How will folks know what climate we garden in if we do not sign our posts?

Testing the image upload features.
Hmmm... have not yet figured out how to embed an image in a message. Maybe it is only attachments.
How to give each photo its caption?
