Regular gardening could help you sleep, study says

A Chinese study of American gardeners found that their chances of a poor night's sleep were almost half that of non-gardeners.

Success!!! Here is a photo of my Carlina acaulis seedlings. The cold stratification apparently was the key to success. I planted about 10 seeds and 6 germinated. After a particularly cold and rainy night, 3 perished and 3 survived. When these guys get a bit bigger, I will repot them into larger and deeper containers. I'll then get to see if they will grow in the heat and humidity here in the summer.  I will protect them from torrential summer rain by moving them under the patio. The good thing is that I learned how to get them to germinate and it only took 2 seasons.

General Discussion / Re: Bulbs EX - Right time to d...

That depends on how hot it is and when did you water (or when did they get rain) for the last time.

I am lifting bulbs whose pots seem fairly dry and there's still some moisture from the last rain two weeks ago. Most have no leaves and roots but some have no leaves but keep living roots, in this case I cover them again.

General Discussion / Bulbs EX - Right time to divid...
Last post by petershaw - Today at 06:16:35 AM
I have a lot of pots with lots of young bulbs, most winter growers. They have just recently gone dormant (some are still "growing").

I had hoped to share many of them via the Bulb Ex but I am wondering if this is the right time to divide them? I thought I understood they should be kept undisturbed until mid summer, but I am open to clarification.

Those Eucrosia seeds sprouted within 3 days after floating. Guess I used a bottle of holy water instead of water from the tap.

Current Photographs / Re: May 2024

Hi again, it seems that Stenomesson leucanthum is a real Stenomesson. Here the original illustration by Ravenna

Pucara_leucantha.jpg

The plant DOES NOT SEEM Rimmer's plant.

And a link to Meerow's paper

https://www.researchgate.net/publication/266271150_Pucara_Amaryllidaceae_Reduced_to_Synonymy_with_Stenomesson_on_the_Basis_of_Nuclear_and_Plastid_DNA_Spacer_Sequences_and_a_New_Related_Species_of_Stenomesson

I know I guy who lives in the area where it and S. chloranthum occur, he is more interested on Hippeastrum but has seen the plants, I hope he gets some seeds.

Bulb and Seed Exchanges / US Bulb Donation Request Sprin...
Last post by Bwosczyna - May 15, 2024, 07:37:01 PM
All:

The donation window for the next 2024 US BX is now open until June 5, 2024 (if you need additional time, kindly advise). Please read below carefully, thanks!

I am ready to accept donations of clean, healthy bulbs at this time.  I am not requiring donors pre-package the donations in ready-to-go packets; I find it easier and more effective to do this myself according to demand and realize not everyone has time to sort and separate, other than species/ssp.  I will need you to label the bag or box to easily identify the bulbs.

Each donor will be credited the postage for the donation or a minimum of $5.

Feel free to include comments or instructions for your donated items, most of us need some help with new items to our collections.

Kindly send your donations to me at:

Bridget Wosczyna

731 Furnace Road
Morgantown PA 19543

Please be sure to send me an email advising that you have sent the bulbs so that I may keep an eye on my mailbox.

This notice will  be mailed out to the PBS list as well.

Email me at bulbexpbs@gmail.com with any questions.

Thanks in advance!
Bridget
