General Discussion / Re: Telos rare bulbs purchases
March 26, 2024, 09:00:47 AM
Telos is a great place to order from. All of their stock is top notch.  I have a beautiful if crowded bulb garden derived  almost entirely from their catalog.  I highly recommend browsing their online catalog and splurging!

With all of the rain we have had this year and a couple inches more predicted this weekend the Brunsvigias and Boophones have really grown.

I guess it has been growing there for a while.  This is the first time it has bloomed.  It appears to be a Nerine

I went from Modesto to the top.  Seemed the wind was in front of me both ways...  That was 40 years ago.

I've had this one for over 15 years and for the past 5 years or so has flowered erratically at various times and leaf stages.  It has ruffled leaves much like the much larger B. haemanthoides in the background but the leaves are recurved and as you can see reach the ground.  The flower size is smaller than other Boophones I have.  Could it be a Aus?

General Discussion / Re: Stake woes

I think I'm going to plant them in a large single pot and let them compete with the winner going into the garden!  fussing over a dozen or so small pots is a pain.

General Discussion / Stake woes

I hate to say it but I have numerous pots sitting about with small likely bulbus growth and I have not clue of what they are.  the stake tips are missing.  It is my fault for using the cheepies that I bought locally and became very brittle, the material is likely mostly calcium carbonate.

One think I do and find it improves germination is to use a small amount of hydrogen peroxide in the water.  about 0.5%.

Thanks guys for your recommendations.  There is a problem! Rain! Who would have thought we have been getting inches of rain every few days and to dig in this mud would be tough.  We have a wonderful soil it drains quickly and in a few days it can be worked but this is crazy! Meanwhile my summer boophone is beginning to sprout. We are expecting another "river" Tuesday which is expected to dump another 3 inches.

Thanks Uli.  I'm going to move the bulb into a large pot.

General Discussion / moving Boophone and Burnsvigia bulbs
February 18, 2023, 01:06:15 PM
Unfortunately my little bulb garden has been overtaken by these very large plants (at least from a bulb perspective).  They are becoming overcrowded and I simply have to move a couple.  I understand they do not take kindly to moving them.  I have one disticha which is now dormant and about the size of a softball.  Any thoughts about moving it to a new location in the garden?  You can contact me privately.

My Brunsvigia bosmaniae's leaves have also covered a lot of ground and they will need attention too.

I should have looked at the other section.  By the way how best to delay the germination of this seed.

A colleague of mine discovered that salsalate regulated the heat production.  He used the voodoo lily as his study subject.  He had a fancy infrared camera that could easily measure the elevated temperature. His name is Ilya Raskin and he is at Rutgers.
