General Discussion / Scadoxus multiflorus question
June 14, 2022, 11:56:21 PM
I have two clones of this species. The tag on one says "1987", with no source. The other has "Croft 2003" on the tag. They are grown side by side in the greenhouse, moderate light, and LOTS of water, almost every day year round, whether dormant or not, because the things around them get watered often. They don't seem to care, and obviously are very tolerant in general. Both clones exhibit dormancy of a few months every year, and generally flower every year. But they're different in behavior.

The 1987 clone flowers with no leaves (picture attached of inflorescences from about 3 weeks ago). Leaves start about the time the inflorescence fades. It has produced only 2 offsets in the ~35 years I've had it. The 2003 clone puts leaves up before flowers (it currently has leaves almost fully developed and has yet to flower this year), and has produced 5 offsets in 19 years. After reading the PBS wiki entry for this species, my question is what subspecies are these?

The wiki entry says ssp. katharinae has "very short to no dormancy in cultivation" and "multiplies rather rapidly by rhizomes", which doesn't seem to match either of these. Ssp. multiflorus might match the 1987 clone - flowering in late May (before midsummer here in NW Arkansas), slow to offset, goes completely dormant, like Bob Lauf's picture flowers without leaves. But which subspecies is the 2003 clone? Or am I misinterpreting the "multiplies rapidly" part of ssp. katharinae?

Kew lists a ssp. longitubus, but the only hits I get in online searches are just for the nomenclature, and the wiki suggests it's rare in cultivation.

I detected a stench while stacking pots in the bleach barrel today, so I was pretty sure the first Dracunculus vulgaris inflorescences were open even before the Turkey Vulture buzzed me at low altitude. Other than our native Arisaema, this is the tuberous aroid I've grown outdoors the longest, and it's still a favorite. I'm curious how many others grow this surprisingly hardy, very easy, and dramatic species?

I've been trying to get notifications and alerts configured, without success. In "Profile of Steve Marak" -> Notifications -> Notification Preferences, "Follow topics" and "Receive message body in email" are both checked. I started with "How Frequently" set to daily, but since that didn't seem to work, I changed it to "Immediately". "Notify me of" is set to "Replies and moderation". "When a topic I follow" and "When a new topic is created" have both "Receive Alert" and "Receive Email". (I can relate the things below those, if needed, but with a few exceptions [such as "Birthday"] they are also set to both "Receive Alert" and "Receive Email".)

Unfortunately, it seems to be necessary to set each individual board within a forum to "Receive email and alerts" manually. But I did that immediately, some weeks ago, for some boards ("Bulb and Seed Exchanges", for example). I've lately also set that for others, such as "General Discussion". But so far I've not received a single email or alert (when I click "Alerts" at the top left, it always says "No alerts"), ever. I've verified that the email address the forum knows is correct.

Must be something simple, but I seem not to be seeing it. Can someone help, please?

I've used a number of forums, but every platform is a little different, so I'm learning my way around this one ... bear with me please.

The text under the "Notifications" tab in "My Account" says to use the "Notify" button when looking at the index of a board to start receiving notifications for that board. I can't find a "Notify" button on that page, but a quick trial and error verified that it's the button that says "No Alerts or Emails". Easy enough.

Am I right in thinking that I can't do global notification set up either from the "Notifications" tab in "My Account", or from the "Forum" page (the one that lists all the available boards) - I have to go dive into each board individually and turn on notifications? It looks like I can modify settings in "My Account", but not establish them?
