NARGS (North American Rock Garden Society) had Pasithea in its most recent seedex.  One donor lives in Seattle and the other in Vashon.

Well, Martin, if you had a dry garden like mine, you wouldn't have many slugs.

I just pick slugs off my plants and stomp on them.

What are the green flowers?

Well, at least you have them surviving.  Mine faded away and I don't think I ever saw a flower.

But then, Eastern North American plants rarely grow here.

Are they growing outside in your garden?

Maybe you could grow some bulbs that grow in wet conditions, like our Erythronium revolutum that grows along stream banks.

Or, the Leucojum aestivum that I saw blooming in a very wet valley in Europe.

Then there is that common European frit that I can't grow in my dry garden - Fritillaria meleagris,

or the spectacular tall camschatcensis on the Alaskan panhandle.

In what seasons does it rain?

Quote from: Judy Glattstein on January 05, 2023, 03:26:57 PMI think I remember reading something about keeping rabbits - or was it chickens? - under the greenhouse benches
The person who did it had ripe tomatoes all winter. It worked well with chickens, but when she tried putting some sheep in, they left as it was too hot for them. I can't remember the name of the book.  I think she copied  Solviva.

I was inspired when I first read it but then realized that it would only work on the east coast of North America, where they get sun in the winter.  Here on the west coast, we seldom see the sun in winter, and if it is out, it is hiding behind tall conifers. No chance of solar heating.

Are you sure that T ovatum is not setting seeds?  Ants may be stealing them.

I bought Balentino and Pink Rascal,  called "hardy amaryllis".  I think one was blooming when I bought it, but it hasn't bloomed since.  It has produced several more bulbs, though.  I keep them in pots in my frost-free unheated greenhouse.

I wonder if I should detach a few of the new bulbs and try them outside.

General Discussion / Nerine seed sizes
December 28, 2022, 10:17:37 AM
I just received seeds of   Nerine augustifolia , filifolia , humilis, masoniorum.

They are very small compared to the seeds of Nerine bowdenii, sarniensis and undulata which I grow.

It is obvious that the seeds are viable, since almost every one started growing as they travelled.

So, two questions:  is it normal for those species to have only small seeds?   and might small seeds
of bowdenii, sarniensis and undulata also be viable?

Well, my amarine did not produce seeds.

Several from Ecuador, and the price per pound is less than it would cost you to mail me a few seeds.
