Ian Young in Scotland has an interesting garden on his driveway.  Just enough left bare for the car wheels, but a mass of low-growing plants up the middle, and taller ones along each side.

Yes I've seen the drive, very good. Despite being in Scotland, where there is a lot more room than England, I don't get the impression he has a vast space.

My neighbour thought he was buying a front yard covered in paviers [1] turns out it is a crevice garden - see him with tweezers, a-weeding-o.

He took no chances on the back yard, fitted plastic grass.

You can do the thing of growing stuff under the car - just pave where the wheels go, and the powers that be would be happier if you did, because of the problem of flooding, but mostly people can't be bothered.
