Dear Jim:
         Probably from citrus country southwards. In the UC Botanical 
Garden, Berkeley, Bob Ornduff had a great collection but in a greenhouse. In 
the same garden, many Lachenalias were growing in the ground sheltered by 
boulders facing west. But, those in the greenhouse looked far better. In the 
same Bay Area there were other Lachenalia plantings and at least one huge 
collection but these in pots. Frost free conditions seemed necessary.
