Yes, mealy bugs can be eliminated with a systemic as John says
(without having to dig the poor plants!). And yes they are a problem in hot
summer weather. Over here control means killing all ants and weeding
dandelions (their host). They can not be destroyed with "organic" methods.
They can be found in the tunics of bulbs in the trade.
