Dahlia monoculture fix?

We might be able to manage a combination of green cover crop and 
ornamental cabbages.  I love them in the spring when they rise up to 
flower, and look so exotic - actually, they might be the flowering 
kale, which are rather fringed compared to the more solid cabbages. 
I see them when I visit the US - big displays in front of restaurants.

I leave my dahlias in the ground but this test group has to dig all 
theirs up and return the tubers to the breeders so they can be 
multiplied to sell if the  test scores were high enough.
