elongated prophyll in Crocus goulimyi

   If I understand what you're describing correctly, then perhaps what you're 
being reminded of are some of the Colchicum species.  I know that C. speciosum 
and C. autumnale here in the the northwest corner of Washington State (USA) both 
do this, and in fact the prophyll elongates during flowering.
