Him and Bill commented about the new book by Janis Ruksans:

A quick glance at the captions of the pictures suggests that it could have
>used a better editor. (Jim)

...

>The editing of many hort. books could use better editing, Jim. I am an
>editor by profession, mostly of textbooks, and now do it
>entirely freelance. I
>talked with representatives of Timber Press once about the possibility of
>taking
>on some projects for them. I was told that they'd love to have that luxury,
>but since the market for a single title is relatively small, they simply
>couldn't afford me. I have no reason to believe that this isn't also true
>for
>most hort. titles. (Bill)

I am also an editor of (mostly academic reference) books and have done
several projects for Timber Press, and I asked them if I could have a pass
over Janis's book -- and said I would do it FOR FREE -- because I knew his
ad hoc English would give a nonspecialist a lot of trouble. The press
(recently bought by a larger publisher) ignored my offer.

So they really have no excuse!
