I put Eucomis pole-evansii in the ground about 5 years ago, planting it
quite deep and putting a lot of mulch on top to protect it in cold winters.
and it flowers regularly. But it is not eight feet tall!

The flowers, which are greenish white, are on a stalk about 75 cm (2 1/2
ft) tall. I seem to recall that they're fragrant. Because of the long cold
spring, the plants emerged only a couple of weeks ago and probably will not
bloom until September this year. In the same area I have E. bicolor, E.
autumnalis, and one of the purple-foliage cultivars ('Sparkling Burgundy',
I think, but there is a controversy about the identity of this clone).
