Question about pest mammals and bulbs

I have observed that squirels are especially interested in new plantings,
apparently attracted to newly dug soil. This seems especially true for small
bulbs newly planted, crocus and the like.

Some people will sprinkle red paper flakes around these plantings, which I
find abhorrent. As much as I don't want squirrels digging up my plantings, I
also don't favor torturing animals. Rub some red pepper flakes in your own eyes
 to see what I mean.

Pin some wire mesh over these plantings instead.
