I think I remember that "amancaes" comes from a Peruvian place name where
the plant grows.

Someone in the bulb fraternity taught me years ago to pronounce amancaes 
with four syllables.  It is apparently Greek, so I vote with Jim McK. on 
this.   (I'm afraid my vowels are probably not very Greek!)
