I'm not sure, but there are plenty of ground squirrels around here that could easily climb up onto my winter bulb benches and eat my Lachenalia if they so desired, and they don't. They do climb up and eat the cacti. Lachenalia are in family Hyacinthaceae which features many poisonous genera. Any obnoxious neighbors you could test some on?
