Dahlia imperialis

Is D. imperialis as heat-tender as its hybrid garden relatives? I recall
with amazement the Dahlia bed near the conservatory in Golden Gate Park. A
few people manage to bloom Dahlia hybrids here in Phoenix but they sprout
tubers in early winter under lights, plant them out in January, and hope
for no frost that year. By April it's usually so hot they die.
